The ‘Dave’ of Davethepotter.ca is Dave Ducker. My studio is at my home in Paris, Ontario, Canada. I both throw (pots made on a potter’s wheel) and hand build in cone 6 (2165 °F/1222°C) stoneware.
Themes that run through my work include: buildings, faces, animals, and plants. These themes can be found in both my functional pottery and my more whimsical sculptural pieces.
A internet search of ‘dave the potter’ with bring up references to dave the slave. I don’t appear in the internet search results until at least the fourth page. The Dave the potter mentioned in the search results was a black slave potter who worked in Edgefield, South Carolina and produced alkaline-glazed stoneware pottery from the 1820s to the 1860s. His life and work are quite interesting and worth learning more about.
It seems that potters and slavery have a long history with slave potters dating back to at least the time of the Roman Empire and likely much earlier.
